Is a Floor Bed Safe for Baby?

Floor beds are not recommended for babies under six months, as they are still developing their independent sleep skills. According to AAP, a child under 2 years of age should be sleeping in a firm crib mattress. SO, if you are planning to get a floor bed for your toddler, you need to get a firm mattress or use a crib mattress. Also, you need to make sure that you do not have any piece of furniture or décor in the room that could be trip and fall on your baby. You also need to baby-proof electrical outlets and cord in the room in addition to baby-proofing cabinets and drawers if you have any in a baby’s room.

Can you put Mattress on the Floor for Toddler?

When you are implementing the Montessori philosophy into your child’s room, one of the cheapest ideas is to put the mattress on the floor for a toddler. For a temporary solution, until you get a floor bed, it is okay, but I won’t recommend that for one major issue. When you have a mattress on the floor, there is minimum air circulation underneath the mattress. Things get worst when you have moisture in your child’s room because darkness, moisture, and damp spot are the perfect recipe for mold and mildew growth. And constant exposure to spores of the mold is a serious health hazard.

What age is Montessori Floor Bed for?   

Montessori floor beds are introduced to toddlers when they are 2 to 4 years old. By the time they do have a sense of independent sleep skills. However, not all toddlers are ready for a floor bed when you transition them. It takes time and discipline to keep them in their bed, but if their sleep is being affected by any means, it is best to wait for them to be ready.

How do I Transition my toddler to a Montessori Floor Bed?

Change is hard even for babies! When you introduce something new to your child, it takes some time and consistent effort to accept the change, and transitioning a toddler to a Montessori floor bed is no different. To make the transition smooth for your toddler, you need to prepare them well in advance by talking to them about the transition. You can also start reading a book about big beds and show them a picture of their future bed or print a picture of the bed and stick it on the wall of your baby’s room.

Also, involve them in a bed assembly when it arrives. When you initially transition them to a floor bed, they may not want to stay in their bed with newly gained accessibility of getting out of the bed. Still, consistent effort, a consistent bedtime routine, setting boundaries and expectations can make the transition easy for both of you.

My priority for getting non-toxic furniture is a bed – whether it is my child’s bed or an adult bed. After all, I do not want my children to breathe toxic chemicals for 10 hours at night.

Here are the things you need to consider when buying a non-toxic Montessori bed for toddlers.

Type of wood

Choose the toddler floor bed that is made of solid wood (Beech, Birch, Oak, or Cherry) or soft solid wood (pine wood). Solid wood toddler floor beds should be the first choice as they are fire-resistant, durable, safe, free from glue, veneers, or formaldehyde. Avoid the beds made of manufactured wood such as engineered wood, MDF, plywood, or particleboard. They are glued together with highly toxic glues or adhesives that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) potentially toxic for your baby.

Alternatively, a toddler floor bed made with eco-MDF coated with zero-VOC paint and glued with soy-based or water-based glue is much safer than standard MDF.

Type of Paint or Finish

It is also essential to consider what kind of paint or finish is used for the bed. The paint or finish makes the bed durable. If paint or finish used is water-based, it is considered less toxic or safe as it has fewer VOCs than oil-based paints.  But water-based paint or finish still emits VOCs in large amounts in the first couple of days. So, if your toddler floor bed is painted with water-based paint, make sure to leave it in the open air for a couple of days before bringing it to your child’s room.

Alternatively, you can purchase a Montessori floor bed unfinished and if you want to give it a color, paint it with zero-VOC paint.
