What is Sleep Sacks?

The sleep sack is a bodysuit made of a thicker material and used when the baby is around 3 months old. It has holes for the arms and head, and it zips up.

It allows the baby to move around but still keep baby contained. It is often known as a sleeping bag or wearable blanket. It keeps the baby warm and at the same time avoids the risk of SIDS due to loose blanket in the crib.

Why put a Baby in a Sleep Sack?

Babies are at higher risk of sleep-related death if they become overheated. Also, a loose blanket in the crib or bassinet increases the risk of suffocation. Putting babies in a sleep sack or wearable blanket is the safest way to maintain the body temperature of the baby without them being overheated.

Also, often moms complain about their babies waking frequently at night. One of the reasons of frequent waking up could be that they are not comfortable in their jammies. They are either too hot or too cold! A good quality sleep sack makes a huge difference in their comfort at night. Also, if you have gross motor skill dominant toddler, sleep sack will help prevent climbing the crib railing.

How big should a Baby Sleep Sack be?

You want to choose a baby sleep sack suitable for your baby’s age and weight. The sleep sacks typically come in 0-6 months, 6-18 months, and 18-36 months. The exact size varies between brands.

Here are the points that you need to take into consideration before picking the right size for your baby.

  • Avoid getting sleep sacks with sleeve or hood, as it increases the risk of overheating
  • The neck holes should be the comfortable size. Not too big that your baby’s head could slip down inside the sack
  • The same goes for armholes. It should not be too big that your baby’s hand could go inside the sleep sack

What Should a Baby Wear under a Sleep Sack?

It really depends upon the temperature of the room where the baby is sleeping. You can decide how to dress your baby based on the TOG rating.

TOG stands for ‘Thermal Overall Grade’ which is a unit of measurement used to calculate the thermal insulation of the product. Our sleep wears are usually given a TOG rating depend on their warmth.

Here is the guideline to help you understand which TOG value is right for room temperature. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the sleeping bag is.

  • 0.5 TOG – ideal for room temperatures between 24-27°C or 75-77°F
  • 1.0 TOG – ideal for room temperatures between 20-24°C or 71-74°F
  • 2.5 TOG – ideal for room temperatures between 16-20°C or 69-70°F

You may need to buy sleep sacks with different TOG rating or need to adjust underneath clothing depending upon the temperature of your nursery.

  • If the nursery is under 69° F – Use a 2.5 TOG sack with a sleepsuit and cotton bodysuit
  • Nursery at 69-70°F: Use a 2.5 TOG with a cotton bodysuit
  • Nursery at 71-74°F: Use a 1.5 TOG with a cotton bodysuit
  • Nursery above 75°F: Use a 0.5 TOG sack and a short-sleeved bodysuit.

These are only guidelines only. You need to check your baby to make sure they are not too hot.

Will my Baby Overheat in a Sleep Sack?

The possibility of overheating a baby depends largely on how you dress a baby at night and the temperature of the room where the baby is sleeping. According to AAP, you should never dress your baby in more than one additional layer than you yourself feel comfortable wearing for specific room temperature that night.

When you put babies in a sleep sack, they are protected from overheating because of a sleeveless arm of the sleep sacks. Also, depending upon the temperature of the room you can decide what the baby wears under the sleep sack.

As common sense, if the room temperature is hot, dress the baby in a cotton sleep bag (avoid fleece sleep bag) and keep the baby in a diaper only underneath.

Can you put a Blanket over a Baby Sleep Sack?

A Loose blanket over a baby sleep sack or sleeping bad is not recommended as it could cover the baby’s face and increase the risk of suffocation.

When should Babies Stop wearing Sleep Sacks?

There is no set age as to when you should stop using a sleep sack. While some babies love to be cozy and secure, others fight to be free.

As soon as your baby starts crawling, they may want to crawl in their crib too. And at that time sleep sack may make it too restrictive for them to crawl. They may resist when you put them into their sack at night.

Most parents find that their babies stop using sleep sacks on their first birthday. That being said, some kids don’t mind using it or a little longer.
