10 Pregnancy-Safe Organic Lip balms for Luscious Lips

Sharing is caring!

Delicate lips are more prone to dryness during pregnancy. If you are looking for one, here are 10 non-toxic pregnancy-safe organic lip balms to keep your lips moist and give it a subtle shine.

Among other not-so-happy side effects of pregnancy, dry or chapped lips are something you will experience throughout your pregnancy and postpartum. It is mainly because the body requires more fluid to meet the need of your growing fetus.

So, applying a good lip balm is essential to keep your lips moist. But not all mainstream lip balms are generated equally. Most of them contain petroleum and other toxic ingredients that are not safe to use during pregnancy and postpartum. Because whatever you put in your body gets absorbed and reaches your baby.

You need a natural, organic, non-toxic lip balm that is not only safe during pregnancy but helps keep your lips moist and add subtle shine to eat.

This article discusses why you should not use petroleum-based lip balm, plus a list of pregnancy-safe, non-toxic, organic lip balms that will find a permanent place in your purse. If you haven’t yet changed to the non-toxic pregnancy-safe foundationnight cream, or nail polish, or natural Candles, you may want to do that too.

Is Petroleum-based Lip Balm safe to use during pregnancy?

Skincare products that contain mineral oil, paraffin, or petrolatum as an ingredient are considered petroleum-based products. These petroleum-based ingredients are by-products of crude oil.

It is an ingredient in many moisturizing products like lip balm diaper rash crème that we use routinely. According to the Environmental Working Group, petroleum is an ingredient in 15% of lipsticks and 40% of baby products and oils you find in the market.

The problem with using the petroleum-based product is that they often contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Many PHAs have mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties posing a serious threat to human health.

Another reason why you should avoid petroleum-based moisturizer is that they lock in moisture but does not allow moisture to be absorbed from the atmosphere. So, it will trap the moisture until it wears off, requiring you to apply it often. They are not a great solution for long-term lip dryness during pregnancy.

Also, you must avoid petroleum-based skincare products for your baby. A study published in Pediatrics in 2000 found that low birth weight infants treated with petroleum jelly were more likely to develop systemic candidiasis. It is because petroleum jelly does not allow the skin to breathe in and creates a warm, moist place for fungi to grow.

So, it is best to avoid petroleum-based lip balm or moisturizer for your personal use or baby. Instead, there are many organic, non-toxic lip balms with natural ingredients that allow moisture exchange and work well for keeping your dry lips moist.

FAQs

Is Nivea Lip Balm safe for Pregnancy?

No, Nivea lip balm is not safe to use during pregnancy. The Nivea lip balm is a chemical-based formula. It contains preservatives like butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Exposure to BHT has been liked to health concerns like cancer, respiratory irritation, endocrine disruption, and organ-system toxicity.

The Nivea lip balm also contains alcohol which ends up irritating the skin. And it also contains fragrance which is mainly a chemical called phthalate. Phthalate is a toxic chemical and should be avoided during pregnancy. A study showed children whose mothers were exposed to phthalate during pregnancy were more likely to have a problem with language development and motor skills.

So, it is best to avoid skincare product that contains chemical fragrance and preservative like BHA and BHT.

Chemicals to avoid in a Lip Balm

You should avoid chemicals in a lip balm during pregnancy and beyond.

Paraben

Any ingredients that end with parabens (methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben) should be avoided in any skincare product during pregnancy. They are considered potential endocrine disruptors.

Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly)

Petrolatum is refined crude oil. As mentioned earlier, petroleum-based products contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PHAs) with mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties.

Preservatives (BHA and BHT)

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are preservatives in lipstick, lotion, lip balm, and other skincare products. But these chemicals are linked to cancer, respiratory irritation, and organ system toxicity.

Alcohol

Lip balm containing alcohol will irritate your skin and dry out your skin.

Fragrance

Toxic chemicals like phthalate are often hidden behind the name ‘fragrance.’ Phthalates are strong hormone disruptors linked to infertility.

Sunscreen

Lip balm containing chemical sunscreen (oxybenzone) should be avoided during pregnancy. Oxybenzone is a known endocrine disrupter linked to causing endometriosis in women.

Conclusion

Mainstream lip balm or chapsticks are not safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. This is because they often contain petroleum derivatives and other toxic chemicals which are not safe to use in pregnancy.

The rule of thumb for choosing a non-toxic lip balm or other beauty products like BB/CC creme, shampoo, body lotions, or nail glue for fake nails is to look for a product that has fewer ingredients that you can read.

I hope this list of 10 pregnancy-safe organic lip balms helped you find perfect solution for your chapped, cracked, or dry lips. It will moisturize your lips without affecting your fetus.

Good luck, mama!!
